Theme of the symposium:
Biomedical Engineering is a driving motor for development, innovation and success in improving health and healthcare. It contributes in more than one way to the well being of the European Community. Besides the health factor it improves the economic vitality of Europe because of improved vitality of its work force and of increasing the value of the Medical Technology Industry.
Aspects of Biomedical Engineering have been stimulated in the European Union several times, such as the Virtual Physiological Human 2,3in FP7. In Horizon 2020 the European Commission aims to integrate all research and innovation funding currently provided through the Framework Programs for Research and Technical Development, the innovation related activities of the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Program (CIP) and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology.
It must be applauded that the Commission aims at strengthening the visibility of the EU added value in research and innovation, creating more synergies and better cooperation between different R & I policies and funding programs among the EU and Member States. However, it is imperative that we strive towards optimal visibility of Biomedical Engineering as a discipline at the European decision making platforms.
This symposium will bring together representative professionals of the European Biomedical Engineering community from Academia, Industry, Healthcare and Policymakers and to discuss how the BME community can maintain and improve momentum of the support for Biomedical Engineering and thereby advance health in our member states and improve Europe's industrial activity in the worldwide competition.
It is imperative to maintain forward It should help EAMBES in picturing Biomedical Engineering as a discipline to our political decision makers which often confuse the interdisciplinary approaches taken in BME with a lack of identifiable professional structure.
